The article, “Consider the Lobster” is about lobsters and their preparation. The author, David Wallace begins the article by describing the fair as, ‘an enormous, pungent and extremely well marketed Maine Lobster Festival’. He tries to give us the cultural oriented view whereby lobsters have been historically considered as a low class delicacy. In this mid coast region, tourism and lobster are closely connected as the annual festival and also targeted as a marketing strategy for the surplus salt-water delicacy. The author goes ahead to describe the activities in this festival as joyful lucrative and loud where the price of a supper is even slightly higher than a ‘Macdonald’s’ meal going at $12. Themed, sun, fun and fine food’, Wallace argues there’s more in these activities than meets the eye. Appealing to the connection of the lobster as an animal with senses, David Wallace begins by classifying the lobster biologically and on its etymology, he explains the name ‘lobster’ as connected with locusts. He goes ahead to claim that lobsters are sea insects that have been in existence since the Jurassic age. Wallace states that the lobster has been in existence before the mammals, meaning that no one is entitled to maim these arthropods in such an audacious way. His vivid descriptions combined with exaggerations make the story interesting and effective.
