The book "I Know Why the caged Bird Sings," offers a dive into the past American traditions revolving around racism against the black people. A deep understanding of the novel in line with historical context reveals that racism has been at the base of the problems suffered by black people, depicted in the novel, in Stamps. The problems are multidimensional, ultimately crystallizing into a sense of inferiority complex. In Stamps, a large community comprising black people was forced to live under extreme pressure. Afraid of being harmed and killed by the white people, the black people had to always be on guard. The major part of the book deals with the problem of racism, resulting in oppression against the black people in their routine life along with a sense of insecurity arising from the domination of whites.
One of the biggest threats to black people was the KKKs. They made the black people unable to live a life of freedom. According to History.com, The KKK stands for the Ku Klux Klan that mainly existed in the southern states. They would target blacks who are successful, rude, ones who do not give white people priority and ones who harass whites. Living with insecurity and always hiding from the KKKs had a significant effect on racism. In the novel, Uncle Willie was hiding from the KKKs after assaulting a white woman. Furthermore, Baily saw a bunch of white people around a dead black person and forcing Baily to help lift the black person into the car, attending to escape murder. This is another case of racism that highlights as to how insecure black people were.
The legislation of the Jim Crow supported oppression against black people. The Jim Crow law seemed ideal by separating the blacks and the whites, but they would receive the same rights. However, in actual, the facilities received by black people were critical inferior to ones received by white ones. According to the Jim Crow Laws, the schools for the black children were purposely built into adverse conditions. The schools were in shambles due to large classes, a lack of textbooks, bad teachers, and bad conditions in order to purposefully impede them from being educated and thereby surpass the white people. The Jim Crow Law also made it extremely challenging to vote. They had to pay extra taxes and also pass a literacy test, which the white people did not need.
