Phoenix is a movie taking us back to the post world war two. The period revolves around a Jewish singer, Nelly, who was betrayed by her husband, Johnny, to the Nazi soldiers. Nelly survived the Nazi death camp, Auschwitz, but with a scar on her face caused by a bullet. Luckily, Nelly gets a face surgery and regains her old face after which goes in search of Johnny to get answers from her past. It is in a dim light pub in Berlin known as Phoenix that she finds Johnny who sees the resemblance of her wife in Nelly then Esther and sees the opportunity to use her in getting Nelly’s inheritance.
Tragedy revolving Nelly’s life with a mixed feeling of love, pain, hate and the urge to know what happened in her past is a clear illustration of melodrama. Peter Brooks (1985) clearly argues that melodrama does not simply represent a fall or defeat from a tragedy, but a response to the loss of the tragic vision. Nelly sets out on a mission to know about her past and does not reveal her real identity to Johnny. However, despite going along with Johnny’s plan and the existence of pain about his betrayal, she still loves him. This act demonstrates romanticism melodrama that is; a modern sensibility backed with no theology and no universally accepted social code.
