Where Are You Going and Where Have You Been Name: Institution: ‘Where Are You Going, and Where Have You Been?’ is a short story that was written by the one Joyce Carol Oates, published in the year 1966. The story was inspired by an article Joyce had read in a life magazine that talked of a killer who had an awkward gait and wore stuffed boots o his feet. Apparently the killer had charmed some three girls, who he eventually killed. Joyce wondered how this killer had managed to charm these girls with all his short comings, so she wrote the short story from the perspective of victim to such a killer (Ramsland, 2011). In the story the character is Connie a fifteen year old girl who spends most of her times either around the house, out with her girlfriends or meeting boys. One night in the summer, a stranger makes a gesture that is threatening in a parking lot, but it does not alarm her (Ramsland, 2011).
