Approximately four million “guest workers” immigrated to West Germany between 1955 and 1973, primarily from countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. However, the effects of the guest worker immigration were denied for a long time. Until the end of the twentieth century, it was still common to reject the notion of Germany as a “country of immigrants”, and, until the end of the 1990s, major parts of the population insisted that migrant laborers were “guests” expected to return to their home country in the near future. The hesitation to recognize immigrants as a natural part of German society has had an impact on arts and culture. Artwork and cultural activities from those with a “migration background” were not perceived as a part of German culture. Artists with a “migration background” found it difficult to obtain funding, and the cultural work of guest workers and immigrants evolved almost exclusively at independent cultural institutions. Despite the often good intentions of the critics and scholars, using these labels such as “guest worker literature”, "foreigner literature”, and “migration literature” tends to reaffirm the distinction between what is perceived as traditional German culture and the culture of migration. The attempts to defend the plurality of lifestyles have fostered new artistic, intellectual, and political art forms. The most recent cultural developments in the twenty-first century have been in artistic endeavors like post-migrant theatre which was established by director Shermin Langhoff. In such artistic productions, migration is no longer presented as a state of emergency, but rather as normal for contemporary societies. An important question for the present and the future is how countries such as Germany can retell their own histories without retreating to simple narratives of “us” and “them”, and without excluding huge parts of their populations by designating the certain groups as “migrants”, “foreigners”, or “people with a migration background”. We propose that art and culture may play vital roles in this process of writing contemporary European history.

Immigrants and refugees in the United States have increasingly avoided cities altogether to settle in suburbia (Radzilowski & Ciment, 2015). A survey of US Census data in 2000 reveals that 56% of the immigrants residing in the largest metropolitan areas of the United States settled in suburbs; by 2013, the amount had increased to 61% (Wilson & Svajlenka, 2014). This study describes how shopping malls have been adapted as markers of cultural identity. The case under investigation is the Sharpestown mall located in southwest Houston in Texas. By the early 1990s, Sharpstown has become one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Houston. Alongside demographic change, a shift from national retailers to local merchants increased during the late 1990s and early 2000s. National retailers, such as Macy's and JC Penney, left Sharpstown Mall. As vacancies rose, immigrant merchants began providing general services such as clothing stores, nail salons, and restaurants serving multi-ethnic consumers with modest incomes. Today, 90% of leasable space in the mall is occupied by non-national retailers. In 2009, mall management announced a name change for Sharpstown Mall—PlazaAmericas—as well as a dramatic interior remodel of the former JC Penney department store into Clarewood Mercado (Sarnoff, 2010). Its outmoded interior was redesigned as a Latin American marketplace. Clarewood Mercado has independent vendor carts organized more like a flea market. The arrangement reflects an urban Latin American market similar to the spatial qualities of indoor market houses in Mexico and Central America, places of origin for most of the merchants. Conventional department store space (Figure 1) was remade into free‐plan environments serving diverse needs. Designers created small‐scale spaces rather than large‐format stores for national brands. In addition, management has significantly altered the original Sharpstown Mall to provide more space for civic activities. For example, the recent renovation includes a 6,000 square foot space open to community groups free of charge. A bright yellow, green, and orange paint scheme replaces the former palette of neutral whites, beiges, and grays, and a Latin American mural beautifies a former space that now serves as a gallery for changing cultural exhibits. In this regard, designers have transformed a conventional space into an indoor urban space. The remodel reveals a design that allows for alternative and unique cultural expressions.
