Education is crucial. However, not all children have the same educational experiences. Family background is a factor that determines the success of a child. The school is not the only place that a person gains new knowledge and is educated. The home is also essential. However, if the parents are not keen to support their children who are low achievers, they will not perform well in school (Lareau, 1987). I agree that parents are essential in the education process. They should play a role in educating the child in the absence of a teacher.
Something interesting about the education system is that there are differences that are determined by gender. For instance, 57% of learners in postsecondary education are women. Since 1976, the number of girls in talented and gifted education programs have surpassed the number of boys enrolled (Office of Civil Rights, 2012). I believe this will result in a disparity in education since it seems that females have more educational opportunities in comparison to males. Unless something is done, the number of girls will continue to increase while the number of boys will reduce. Another issue in the education system is the increasing gap among learners due to differences in income achievement. This means that learners from high-income families tend to perform better in comparison to learners from low-income families. The students from high-income families have higher school completion rates for both high school and college, and most of them enroll in college (Reardon, 2013). They have access to more resources that ensures they do better in school in comparison to students from low-income families. This cannot be resolved unless the social issues that lead to differences in income distribution are prevented. The problem is further aggravated by segregated poor and rich towns (Turner et al. 2016). This means that rich states or locations tend to spend more on schools since the locals pay higher taxes.
The poor locations have less money to spend on school. These differences only increase the gap in regards to student achievement due to financial background (Hocker, 2020). Despite the radical education reforms that have occurred over the years, such as the changes after the Brown v. Board of Education, the educational system is still very segregated. Many segregated schools still exist today, whereby some schools have a majority of white students. Income segregation is also linked to racial segregation, whereby due to racial issues, most people who are po...
