The Seattle General Strike
The Seattle General Strike of 1919 is not a well-known event of American history, but it was an important event in the development of the U.S. labor movement. The Seattle General Strike represented the high point of labor's power in the immediate aftermath of World War I. This was the first general strike in U.S. history which was planned and organized by a central labor council. (The railroad strikes of 1877 included workers from many industries and unions, but was not organized by a union federation or council.)
