Thesis
It is important to have a well-articulated thesis for your essay. Typically, the thesis is the last sentence of the first paragraph and should overview the focus of your essay. All body paragraphs should tie back to the thesis. Please be sure to review the lesson from Week 3 for details and examples of how to develop an effective thesis.
Textual Evidence
When writing a literary analysis it is important to develop an argument and synthesize the literature. The skillful use of textual evidence in the form of, summary, paraphrase, and direct quotations, can illustrate and support the ideas you are developing in your essay. However, textual evidence should be used judiciously and only when it directly relates to your topic. The correct and effective use of textual evidence is vital to the successful literary analysis essay.
Textual evidence should be used to support the claims you make in the body paragraphs. Citing evidence within your paper allows you to develop stronger paragraphs and demonstrates your knowledge of the reading and ability to engage with key points. 
Citations
Be sure to weigh and consider the type of evidence used in your essay. Direct quotes should be used sparingly and longer, block quotes should be avoided in a paper of this length. Your goal is to select only the most significant lines and focus on your own analysis of the lines and passages you select.
Summarizing and paraphrasing points form the reading often works well and helps your essay maintain an original focus. Please keep in mind, summarized and paraphrased material must still be cited in-text.

A Room of One's Own is an essay by Virginia Woolf. The essay was originally a lecture delivered to college women on the subject of women and fiction. The book however evolved to reflect the impact women suffrage would have had on the literary scene if women had equal opportunities as men. The essay notes the discrepancies in the financial power of men and women. This the author argues that this discrepancy impact women and leads to a significant erosion of their creative genius. The essay contributes to contemporary fiction by agitating for the freedom of the sexes. Woolf argues that "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." The author notes that by limiting these resources from women, they are unable to fully exercise their mental acuity. The result is a stunted contribution to literary works CITATION Woo89 \l 1033 (Woolf, 1989). The paper, therefore, explores the essay contribution to contemporary feminism. The paper will further look into Woolf's depiction of female character and their necessity in agitating for the feminism cause.
Woolf's Depiction of Female Characters
The major character in the essay is the narrator. The author does not provide her with a given name but the narrator asks the audience to call her either "Mary Beton, Mary Seton, Mary Carmichael…" or any other name that the reader chooses. In failing to provide the narrator with a name, the author allows a critical part of her identity to remain fluid. As such, the narrator represents the dynamic nature of women. The choice of name or lack thereof further portends the universality of the essay. Woolf ensures that the narrator's voice is unhampered by a single identity that can be attacked and diminish the feminist cause for which it is agitating.
Mary Beton is an aunt to the narrator. She is instrumental in showing the importance of financial independence to women and in particular feminism. The aunt provides the narrator with a legacy of 500 pounds a year. In doing so, the aunt guarantees that the narrator as a writer remains unencumbered with seeking to earn a living and can instead concentrate on writing fiction.
