The current president of the U.S. Donald J. Trump is popularly known for his idea of building a border wall along the southern border. Some people even argue that he made building the border wall his campaign theme and eventually won on it. The main reason behind the wall is to stop illegal immigrants from Mexico entering the U.S. However, the repercussion of this idea seemed to have not been well thought of as well as its feasibility being unrealistic.
Ryman, Wagner, O'Dell, and Crow (2017) point out quite a number of uncertainties surrounding the feasibility of the wall project. Its effectiveness hangs in the balance because the immigrants are determined if not blackmailed and threatened by the Mexican drug cartels to reach the other side of the border. The lives of the immigrants are in imminent danger as a result of the wall erection. This is because the immigrant tries to explore other parts of the border to cross that are relatively dangerous and end up dying from the harsh condition or starvation. These among other atrocities that surround the encounter of crossing the border have been brought to light in Ryman, Wagner, O'Dell, and Crow (2017) works, as well as in their documentaries.
The primary objective of the wall was to curb the illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. through the southern border. These immigrants are usually associated with infinite crimes in the U.S., among them being drug trafficking. The Mexicans, however, in their search for fortunes in the U.S. are left with no other choice but to try and cross the border either legally or illegally. The search for fortunes can be a genuine and reasonable cause for one's migration but the vitality in the process is minimal and even worse as the wall is erected. USA TODAY Network (2017) in their film featuring the death of Mexican immigrants in the wilderness is a revelation of undeserved conditions that no human being whatsoever has to go through. They may be illegal immigrants but they should not be subjected to such harsh conditions that can eventually lead to death. The right to life must always prevail.
Another significant revelation from the documentaries is that the drug cartels have made the border crossing a business opportunity (USA TODAY Network, n.d- c). Under normal circumstances, one would cross the border either on their own or with the help of human traffickers. With the stringent measures from the border patrol reinforced with the erection of the border wall, the immigrants are tasked with tougher hustle in crossing the border. The drug cartels or the human traffickers take advantage of the desperate need of the immigrants to cross the border, using them in drug smuggling as a price to pay to facilitate border crossing, sometimes escalating to death threats to loved ones. Sometimes this arrangement does not work and the immigrants end up in the hands of border patrols and later convicted of drug smuggling at the expense of the actual human traffickers or the drug lords.
