Predestination
Predestination is one of the fundamental beliefs among Christians. It has generated much criticism. This essay assesses the Calvinism approach to predestination and why some Christians find it hard to accept. It also discusses the methodological appeal of Loyola’s spiritual exercises to release the depression of salvation among human beings.
Predestination means the total hopelessness of human existence in front of the power of God (Fordham). God can predestine and select human beings to grant salvation. Calvinistic view demonstrates that God has already chosen people for salvation, and the others will not get this in afterlife whatever good they do. One might argue that there is a promised reward for good deeds in doctrine. This concept, in Calvin opinion, has another implication (Fordham). According to him, every good deed has an evil motive behind its execution. The man is evil at heart and has no control over him to change this heart. Hence, the total population of human beings is evil and worth punishment except those whom God has elected. This election by God is entirely dependent on his will and not associated with any goodness in humankind because man is not good at heart (Fordham).
This doctrine, with roots in sculptural doctrine, is hard to believe by some Christians. Notably, the current studies on theology, philosophy and biblical interpretations, many Christians question the authenticity and logic of this Calvinistic notion. According to them, predestination is an antithesis to man’s free will and personal power. It refers to the idea that we are predestined to whatever God chooses for us regardless of our virtues and sins.
