Territories are often put up for fortification against enemies. Society has trained us that if anyone crosses our boundaries, we are bound to attack and suppress them. However, this is not the case as some adversaries tend to be stronger than us and this gives them a chance to crumble the systems we may have established over the years. Despite them crossing our lines, we have the qualities of adapting to any situation to survive. Johnny Mnemonic by William Gibson is a story of how territories are fiercely protected by different classes of people who have distinctive cultures throughout a town. The author throws in a colonial setting in the story when he shows a society that is segregated and lead by a particular group. It shows themes such as Eurocentrism, hybridity, and imperialism which make postcolonialism theory the most appropriate as it shares the same principles as the themes portrayed in the story.
The postcolonialism theory analyses periods of domination where subjects are segregated in different ranks in society and each of these levels have distinct characteristics as well as roles. In the story by William Gibson portrays a society that is segregated; where each of these divides either has certain privileges they enjoy or are deprived. For instance, the Yakuza are seen as the colonizers as they can go across different territories without being questioned because they have the resources and power. They exercise their influence on the Dogs, Lo Teks and have already absorbed gangs such as the Triads, the Mafia and the Union Corse.
