It is difficult to express one’s emotions in our life because these will be perceived as one’s imperfections. This leads to suppression which enhances the burning feeling of dismay, sadness, and disgust. Because of life’s imperfections and the difficulty in expressing one’s dismay, in reality, some people opted to write or narrate about their feelings. One of the short stories that visualize life’s imperfections is “The Shawl” by Louise Erdrich.
“The Shawl,” tells a story about love and life choices and the consequences of these. It characterized human relationships, where one either destroys or builds the other's life, thereby highlighting life’s imperfections. Here, a married woman named Aanakwad decided to love another man and bore a child with him. The child was a daughter, whom Aanakwad loves with the same gravity of her father's love. Knowing that what she did was wrong, she turned into a gloomy person, which enhanced her already lousy personality. In addition to her child from an affair, Aanakwad also had children from her husband. Ironically, Aanakwad wanted to bear another child when she could not take care of her first children with her husband.
