Similar to biological evolution, social systems also change through time under the influence of external factors. These factors shape and determine which traits are considered desirable and which are not, thereby causing the observable social system that people live in. Accordingly, understanding how the principles of Darwinism helps establish social systems is an essential tool for analyzing culture, society, and the very reality of life. Thus, this paper would focus on how Social Darwinism leads to modern-day issues in the United States, such as inequality, immigration policies, and theological debate, among others. All in all, the author believes that the idea of Social Darwinism to Americans has brought about the different repercussions that led the American nation to where it is today.
Social Darwinism in America
One of the adverse effects of social Darwinism in America is inequality. In Darwin's original work, he espoused the concept of 'survival of the fittest', which means that those who have the right characteristics would survive and pass their traits to the next generation, who would undergo the same process. While Darwin intended his explanation to only apply to biological systems, other scholars, and policy-makers alike, such as Herbert Spencer, adopted this idea in the development of the society CITATION Hof92 \l 1033 (Hofstadter, 1992). Thus, proponents of the concept strongly believed that those who are poor and unproductive are born with the inherent trait of laziness and lack of intelligence to be able to uplift themselves in society.
