Essay Instructions:

REFLECTION #1:
In responding to one of the questions below, use several paragraphs and 500 words to share your perspective on, understanding of, and experiences with, the topics assigned. The short reflective assignments are each worth 5% each of your course grade and are evaluated based on the depth and understanding you display of course concepts (see rubric on Bb). Papers should be typed, double spaced, have 1” margins, and in a professional font, attached as a word doc at the bottom of the assignment post. Include analysis of the topic assigned, not just a description. Depth is the key issue. Don’t be afraid to carefully examine what you believe and why you believe what you believe and cite empirical data to inform your reflection (empirical data being your textbook or a journal article).

Assignments must be submitted online on Blackboard by 11:59 p.m. on the due date listed. Any reflection paper sent after this time will not receive full credit. Please submit reflection papers as Microsoft word files labeled lastname.firstname.reflection#. Ex. if Joe Smith was turning in reflection paper #12, he would label the file smith.joe.reflection2.
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING REFLECTION PROMPTS:
1) What do you see as the role of gender diversity in innovation and scientific discovery. Do you think hiring practices to promote gender diversity are fair? Why or why not?
2) Page 67 of your textbook has a list of guidelines for gender-fair research. What does it mean to conduct gender-fair research when gender is an important lens to understand behavior? Is it possible to conduct gender-fair research? If so, how? If not, what are some issues that will be difficult to examine using a gender-fair research design? Provide some examples of research questions for which this will not be feasible.
3) Consider the Women's Marches in January 2017. Do you think the Women's Marches were sufficiently inclusive of different sexes, gender identities, and sexual orientations? Did they sufficiently address issues of intersectionality, diversity, class, and globalism, or were they just more of the "same old same old?" Why or why not?
4) What do you think of the concept of gender fluidity? Does this theory enable you to better understand your own gender identity? If so, how? If not, why not? What theory discussed in this chapter has enabled you to better understand your own gender identity development?
5) What’s the difference between equality and equity? What would these look like if you considered these principles for use with the privileges listed in Table 1.2? Indeed, do all these privileges lend themselves to solutions using these principles?
6) What is the most difficult assertion you have read in the first chapter? Apply the critical thinking skills on pages 31–32 to this assertion. What part/aspects of this assertion becomes easier to examine? What part remains difficult to address?
500 words to share your perspective on, understanding of, and experiences with, the topics assigned... evaluated on the depth and understanding you display of course concepts.

Prompt 1: gender diversity in innovation and scientific discovery
Gender diversity has the ability to drive and influence scientific discovery and innovations. Additionally, gender diversity ensures that both men and women are actively involved in making discoveries; this is possible where both males and females share research facilities such as the laboratories. Having men and women sharing workspaces would easily facilitate the development of new ideas and also creates more opportunities that may be exploited to actualize the anticipated scientific discoveries. Besides, gender diversity in innovations would include influencing the composition of the research teams where a diverse team comprising of men, women, and other gender-diverse people is established to help facilitate different ideas, beliefs, and perspectives.
Further, gender diversity helps improve the effectiveness and suitability of the innovations and discoveries made in the real world. It is critical to note that scientific discoveries should address the needs and wants of all gender-diverse people. Therefore, gender diversity plays a critical role during innovations by improving the problem conceptualization process; this is because different genders have diverse ways of representing the problems and also solve the issues differently (Nielsen, Bloch & Schiebinger, 2018). In this case, gender diversity helps promote cognitive diversity during innovations, heightening creativity, and encouraging discoveries for novel solutions.
Additionally, gender diversity also helps in sparking innovations and discoveries through broadening the research questions, the viewpoints, as well as the areas focused by the researchers. It is critical to note that both men and women have the poten...
