The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is regarded as one of the most important literary pieces in the British literature due to the excitement and ‘healthy confusion’ that it delivers to its readers with every succeeding paragraph that unveils. For most literary critics and readers alike, the way in which Conrad portrays how Marlow sees the horrors around him – filled with ambiguity and murkiness – is interesting, catchy, and unusual during the era when it was published.
Perhaps, as we all know, a good literature (or novel specifically) is determined by its ability to deliver a sense of ‘healthy confusion’, that makes it inevitable for the reader to anticipate and imagine what would happen next. In itself the novel is filled, if not created, with the purpose of bringing a sense of confusion to its readers. Conrad wrote in a style where he brings in the essence of dubiety and disorder at the beginning of a paragraph/part of the story while he then brings a sense of clarity in the succeeding pages.
