The Good that Giving Does
When I was younger, my parents always told me to give to charity. I gave, just to follow my parents' advice, but many times, I did it grudgingly. I did not understand why I had to be generous, but maybe it was also because I did not trully understand what generosity meant. Not until I experienced it myself.
If there's any good the economic turmoil has brought, I think it is the fact that people are becoming aware of the need to share what they have to others. When one meets a homeless person, starving and shivering in the cold, it tends to bring back one's humanity. For one, a dollar may just be that - a dollar, almost worthless. But when you give it to someone who hasn't eaten for a week, it becomes an enabler - now the homeless guy you just gave a dollar, can buy something to soothe his hunger.
Charity as a practice is all about giving to those who are in need. It can be done by giving money, items or even service to those...
