The Evolution of Democracy in the Early Republic
Many historians and researchers have studied the growth of democracy in the early republic of America (Caldwell, 2007). After the world war in 1802, America experienced different styles of leadership from various leaders. Some of the leaders were democrats, while others were republicans; this was a result of their different beliefs about what authority meant (Lachman, 2017). Moreover, this was due to the power they had of appointing any person they would wish for a particular position. Thus, they could manipulate people and have the cabinet they could easily control (ushistory.org, 2019). Jefferson and Jackson were both presidents of America at different times, and they had different ideas and views about leadership.
Firstly, Jefferson was a republican while Jackson was a democrat (Caldwell, 2007). Jefferson believed that each person had his/ her fundamental rights, such as happiness and liberty. Additionally, he believed in the right to democracy (Lachman, 2017). On the other hand, President Jackson believed in exercising his strong power on the people of America. He supported discrimination between white and black people (ushistory.org, 2019). For instance, both poor and rich white men had the power to vote while the poor black people were denied the right to vote (Lachman, 2017). Secondly, during the reign of Jefferson, only the educated individual was allowed to be in power. He believed that through education, even the poor could get a chance to rule at some point in their lives (Caldwell, 2007). Contrary, Jackson thought any individual could get elected or appointed in any public office regardless of their educational level.
