Being at Trident has been quite an experience. Before leaving for school, everyone (a major assumption) gets to have a talk with their parents about working hard and taking their studies seriously. In such points, parents make it clear that they expect and hope for nothing but the best for their children. Well, I never had this discussion with my parents. My parents have always been ardent believers of doing what makes you happy. From a young age, they encouraged us to follow our paths and do what we believe will make us happy. So, the opportunity at Trident was taken as a step in my path towards my happiness. I, therefore, received my parents’ blessings and started my studies.
While at Trident, I had my expectations. With every opportunity, one always concocts some expectations and test their experience against these expectations. For me, I did not limit myself to the educational experience the school offered me. I ventured farther to how my perception of life would be enhanced. I wanted to see the world differently and Trident offered me the opportunity to have my perception broadened. When you come from a conservative background, you grow with some beliefs about the world. However, education gifts one the best experience especially when one seeks or is ready to see the world through different lenses. So, Trident offered me more than an educational experience. It prepared me for any future educational and career plans that I may have.
One particular lesson that stood out for me was when we handled The Danger of a Single Story: Recognizing and Respecting the Rich Dimensions of Diversity. While taking this class, it never occurred to me that my perception of the world and of other people who are not from my ethnic background was skewed. I got to say by the end of the class that one never admits they are biased towards their own until it is pointed out by someone else.
