As a young child, one admires how the grown-ups can form words and utter them as well without any problem. I was always amazed and wanted to be able to learn words and different vocabularies and be able to apply them during a conversation. For the grown-ups, I could tell they were not struggling and that some could use certain vocabularies which distinguished them from others. After a few years of bad pronunciation and limited vocabulary, I found myself enrolled in school, and the expectations were enhanced almost all of a sudden. Teachers from all subjects expected greatness in every student. We would recite poems and memorize certain quotes which only seemed to instill fear in those who were not academically gifted. Unfortunately, I was part of this group, and the reason was I struggled with mathematics. I was not poor in math but I never went beyond a certain point or mark, and this seemed to anger my teachers, who transferred their disappointment to my parents. Unknowingly to me, passing in math was almost synonymous with acquiring one’s dream job and people, my teachers specifically, put a lot of emphasis to how one faired in math. Never minding our young age, teachers would indirectly instill fear in us by letting us know that our average performance in math will lead to uncomfortable lives. Unknown to them was the place I was coming from. My parents never seemed determined or moved to push me to improve my math grade. They did help me with my homework, but their dislike of it was almost tangible. The problem was, I believed their notions and slowly adopted their attitude towards math. However, even though it took me a while to realize it, the attitudes and beliefs of one’s parents should not in any way interfere with the development of ideas and beliefs of the child.
With math as a problem, I took an interest in reading and decided to dedicate most of my time to reading books. My teachers, though, intensified their efforts in trying to make me improve my grade in math. At one point, I was given more homework and was almost forced to understand math. Regardless of the method my teachers used, my grade almost never improved. However, as I came of age and begun to understand life and what impacts or influences a person’s attitudes and preferences, I realized that my parents do play a great role in how I view things in life.
