Should states make the first two years of college free? Five states and two cities have recently enacted measures in this regard, and the lawmakers are being requested to make the first two years of college free given that most of the students belong to poor and needy families. There is a strong need to provide children with the best educational facilities because the fate of the country depends on how educated and successful they are. Over 20,000 Oregonians and nearly 24,000 Tennesseans have already been allowed to go to the community colleges for free, and students of California and New York City demand the same from the government (Hoffower).
Despite Barrack Obama’s efforts to expand the network of technical training programs and the proposal of providing school and college students with free education, a large number of schools, colleges, and universities across the country continued to charge huge tuition fees. The issue was brought to light in 2015 when the president announced several scholarships for brilliant and deserving students and announced that the community colleges would provide free education to all students without any discrimination. The idea generated much buzz in 2016 when Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders came forward and threw in their favor and firm support (Zamudio-Suaréz).
In her article titled College is More Expensive Than It has Ever Been, Hillary Hoffower provides some of the reasons for why education for college students should be free for the first two years. First of all, education acts as the backbone of the economy. If more and more students are facilitated and allowed to complete their graduation without worrying about tuition fees, then they will eventually contribute to the progress of the country and can strengthen the economy to an extent (Hoffower).
It should be noticed that a large number of international students are studying in different schools, colleges and universities of the United States. They are reportedly asked to pay more tuition fees than what the local students pay per year. The government should pay immediate attention to this discrimination, which is ruining the lives of various students across the country. In order to meet their college expenses, students are sometimes required to do jobs, or else their parents refuse to send them to colleges as they cannot afford to pay a lot regarding tuition fees (Zamudio-Suaréz).
