Speech on Increasing Surface Albedo.
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, we all understand that surface albedo modification is a technique aiming to reflect more light to the space by enhancing earth albedo. Earth albedo is the sunlight that is reflected from the earth's surface. High albedo means that most of the solar radiation is reflected. For example, when an area has a low albedo, a dark ocean surface reflects a small amount of radiation and absorbs much of it mostly as heat. We, therefore, need to understand the ways to increase surface albedo, starting from farming so the vegetation can reflect light, doing away with forest in the snow-covered regions, covering massive drylands with huge reflective materials, painting mountain tops and roofs with white paints.
Jandaghian and Akbari (2018) argue that growing high albedo crops is modifying crops by generating plants with more reflective leaves is one approach. This gives genetically modified crops and trees a good chance to thrive in this area as they carry the biosafety aspect and land use effect of the crops, including soil erosion and use of chemicals.
