In the novel "The Great Gatsby," Fitzgerald demonstrates numerous themes on the gender roles, especially for women in the 1920s. Fitzgerald uses the characters of women to depict their roles and the position they occupy in the society in a quite conservative manner. Fitzgerald attempts to show how the society perceives a woman. However, from the description of the four women who were accompanying Benny McClenehan into a club, Fitzgerald's passage clearly shows the lack of value of women, and it reinforces the traditional notions of gender and patriarchy during the 1920s.
First, the notion brought about by the words "they were never quite the same ones in a physical person" displays women as attention seekers. Women are people who mold through different appearances so as to attract the attention of men in their drunken hysteria (Fitzgerald 2012). This is further illustrated by a young woman who dumps her cocktail and throws herself on the podium to dance to seek attention. Also, the names of the women had significance in building the theme intended by the author. We are told that their last names were melodious names of flowers and months or sterner ones of the great American capitalists. In essence, these girls were given names or invented their names to be melodious and attractive to suit their new acquaintances in the party (Fitzgerald 2012).
