In the world’s largest city of Shanghai, China, with over twenty-three million people, stands the 128-story mega tall skyscraper, the Shanghai Tower. Built in a city district known as Bund, it aimed at cautioning the people of Shanghai metropolis from challenges of pollution, congestion, and lack of space. It would achieve this by offering all amenities, clean air, and sunlight gardens under one roof that went up instead of in a wide area. The building of the over 2,000 feet skyscraper in nine sections came with many construction and design challenges, among them the following.
One of the building’s significant design challenges was constructing the airy sunlight open space in between the skyscraper that wrapped the entire building. The open space required a second skin of smooth, transparent wall built from bottom to the top made of glass that appeared to float in the air. The erection of this open space was problematic; first, there were no designs to follow. Therefore, the architects and engineers had to rely on their design and knowledge to build it without the help of prior experience. Second, to bring this design to life, the engineers had to make the heavy multilayered glass seem to float in the air leaving an open space. Ordinarily, buildings have such curtain walls attached to the structure from bottom to the top.
