Scholarly communication distinguishes the graduate from the undergraduate  student! Even though, writing has a purpose and intended audience, scholarly writing differs from other forms of writing with its emphasis on evidence. Evidence from the literature supports the conclusion made in scholarly writing, but the source of information must be objective to support the writing (Laureate Education (2012a). Hence, writers must back up what they write rather than writing what they believe or simply providing assumptions or opinions (Laureate Education, 2012b). In any case, the intended audience is informed and providing evidence gives credence to what is written. Hence, scholarly writing requires critical reflection, where writers then take into consideration research literature to either confirm or disapprove viewpoints and opinions.
To communicate to different audiences, it is necessary to be specific and use language that the intended audiences can understand. Learning about the audience can also make a big difference in facilitating communication, as one can connect with them even as they have different perspectives. To build trust and rapport with the audience embracing the differences while focusing on clarity and the content to get the message across to avoid miscommunication. The clarity and sufficiency of the message allow writers to develop convincing and logical arguments and make an impact on the audience.
The purpose of writing is the intended outcome, including persuasion, inform, educate and support opinions. The target audience is those who are expected to read the writing, and the main audience. The presence of bias is associated with making unsubstantiated claims or using faulty and subjective evidence.
