Discuss the ideas developed by the text creator about the ways in which feelings of satisfaction and regret influence an individual
People who are satisfied, are better placed to handle their disappointments and do not remain with the feeling of guilt as they are able to move on unlike those whose lives are filled with regret. In Shawshank Redemption, some prisoners become content with life, while others regret that they were caught and endure a miserable life. Red the narrator admits to his mistakes and Andy Dufresne, is the main focus of the short story as recounted by Red, who also touches on being imprisoned at Shawshank for murdering his wife for an insurance policy. Andy serves a life sentence for being wrongfully convicted of murder, but he is hopeful despite his plight.
Feelings of satisfaction and regret influence an individual’s action, perceptions and outlook in life as those who are satisfied have a positive outlook and focus on the future.
Red is surprised by Andy Dufresne, who never loses hope and who encourages those around him while in prison as he is satisfied that one day he will be free. Andy was a young and successful banker and even after he is accused and imprisoned after the death of his wife and his lover, he never loses his dignity in prison. As there is faith in the face of adversity, Andy is out to redeem himself and even after seclusion and for more than two decades. Even after seclusion and for many years, Dufresne devises a secret plan to escape from the prison, while Red regrets being caught and barely makes any effort to redeem himself.
Andy is hopeful of a better future even, as he takes a difficult path in the penitentiary system staying there for about two decades; he takes time to plan his escape. Unlike prisoners who were impatient and restless because their appeals for freedom failed, Andy decided to make his escape and expose a corrupt prison system that neither rehabilitated nor allowed prisoners to redeem themselves. Andy realized there was a need to focus on the present and future are much more important than focusing on the past that he could not change and in a way made Red realize his mistakes and seek to redeem himself to live a more fulfilling life.
During the first few years while prison, a gang of gay prisoners cause trouble for Andy and a warden makes it difficult for him to get paroled, and he is dissatisfied with the situation, but he is patient and learns to cope. “They are to prison society what the rapist is to the society outside the walls. They're usually long-timers, doing hard bullets for brutal crimes. Their prey is the young, the weak, and the inexperienced” Rather than the prison being a place of redemption and rehabilitation there are exploiters who rely on the weak and vulnerable. Satisfaction is closely linked with the situation where there is no bitterness and regret.
