Human beings spend most of their time negotiating to survive. Negotiations contribute to healthy professional and personal life. It is, therefore, imperative to learn the rules of negotiations and also to learn better techniques of negotiation. When negotiating, it essential to set the rules before the start and ensure every party is aware of the said rules beforehand (Lee, 2007. Negotiation is always a give and take scenario, and both sides must be ready to make a concession. Before negotiations, one must do thorough homework on the interest and position of the other party. One must also be careful not to negotiate against themselves as that would give the opponent an advantage.
Even though negotiations rules are always spelled and each party privy to them, most negotiators are likely to employ a dirty trick that is coercing the opponent into concession or accepting an unpopular decision. When faced with a situation where the opponent applies dirty trick, the first thing to do is to ignore the tactic and continue to negotiate in good faith (Keillor, 2007).
