The Case for Sugar
Paul Rudnick's article on The Case for Sugar is a recent commentary on sugar published on the New York Times magazine on February 4, 2017. His article is just released at a time when there is a heightened war on sugar all over the world with thousands of books and research findings being published all demonstrating fatal illnesses caused by sugar. He, however, does not dispute those findings. Rudnick's career has entirely been entrenched all around artist. He is a famous novelist, playwright, essayist and a screenwriter of America who has been branded one of the pre-eminent humorists by the New York Times. He has produced numerous plays on Broadway and around the world such as I Hate Hamlet and Jeffrey among other famous plays throughout the world. He has won most precious awards such as Obie Award and Outer Critics among others. He is a regular contributor to the New Yorker where most of his essays and articles are mostly featured. One of his main points in this article comes from the logical reasoning that people love sugars sweetness and that sugar tastes sweet and good. Rudnick argues that sugar is the only sweetest thing on earth that has got no substitute even though it can cause all sort of harm to man. In his article, Rudnick further convinces the reader that besides sugar being tasteful, it is beneficial. He successfully accomplishes this task by employing appeals such as logos, pathos, and ethos.
The purpose of this article is to convince the readers that sugar tastes good that they cannot afford to forego sugar products for other materialistic goods such as books and that sugar has no substitute for its sweetness. He further goes ahead to highlight its benefits stating that sugar can heal break ups, fruitless job interview pain or even dilute partisans among the members of a Congress. The author insists that sugar is very important in most of the industries that prepare products such as Hostess products, Hershey and Mars products. It is a state addictive substance as was voted for in New Jersey while the author was still a young boy. Rudnick wrote this article clearly stating his positive opinion and passion for sugar upon the wake of colossal research and publications condemning sugar as the main cause of the illnesses that are costing Americans and the rest of the world population millions of dollars seeking medical care. He expresses this in response to costs of illnesses caused by sugar "I dispute none of this." Here the author appreciates the fact that sugar can be dangerous but proceeds to demonstrate to the reader that sugar is still sweet and beneficial despite the fact that it is dangerous.
The author uses advanced theoretical language, citing facts and literal analogies to construct logical arguments in the article. In a theoretical language as well as a logical reasoning, the author argues that sugar is tasteful and is most preferred given competing needs.
