Urinary tract infections also happen to be the most common nosocomial infection reported. Of all of the UTI's reported, 80% of them are caused by the use of indwelling urinary catheters. Improper use and duration of indwelling catheters put patients at unnecessary risk for complications, longer hospital stays, and cause a financial burden on the health care system. Although there are set guidelines for placement and retention of these indwelling catheters that are supposed to be followed, the incidence of these catheter acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTI's) is still relatively high. This could be because many times catheters are left in for unnecessary reasons whether it's just an oversight by the physician or nurse or it's for convenience, either way it puts patients at risk for infection. Background of Study There is a direct correlation between the duration of indwelling urinary catheters and the incidence of CAUTI's. The purpose of the research article being reviewed is to determine if the use of a criteria based reminder system would help reduce the use indwelling urinary catheters and reduce the incidence of CAUTI's. This study is significant to nursing because it will help determine whether or not a reminder system can improve patient outcomes. Background of the study
While there is an ever increasing attention towards the women with disabilities in the last three decades, not much of that has gone towards the abuse that is meted upon them. This abuse ranges from physical, emotional to even sexual. Compared to the other women that are able, the disabled women have a much higher risk of being abused. There is not much research that has been done to give the disabled the voice of their outcry. This has led to the lack of the right policies and support services that they can rely on (Plummer & Findley, 2011). This scarcity on the information regarding the horrors that the disabled have to go through is due the kind of reluctance the general society has continued to show, by failing to admit to the violence. This is further compounded by the fact that the general public devalues the disabled. Part of the public actually believes that the disabled are asexual and dependent. These are not issues that have just picked up during the human rights revolution, but they have been around for quite a long time, where the disabled in the society have been treated as lesser persons and marginalized. Those that try to reach out are met with a lot of hostility, by the law, social circles and even in the health care centres.
Relevance to nursing
This is a study that is very significant to nursing, being part of the society and the health care system that also contribute to the discrimination that the disabled are exposed to. While there are some hospital facilities that are entirely designed to take care of the disabled, they have been a long time coming. Majority of the other general hospitals do not have the benefit of handling the disabled as they should. They are not entirely to blame as this is a phenomenon that spreads from the legal bounds, to the insurance companies and their policies and then finally connects to the health care services....
