Charles Dickens was not only an author but one of the most important social commentators of his time, who used his writing as a tool of expression for his criticisms of Victorian England. After reading the selection from Charles Dickens’ Hard Times, choose one of the following topics to find out more about, and write a clearly developed and well-formed research paper on your chosen topic. Follow the writing process and use APA format to cite sources used. Use the following two websites to help you in your writing:

Dickens was a strong champion for children’s rights in a time when children were treated as property. Research and discuss some of the abuses of children during Victorian Times.

Classism in England during the Victorian Era
During the Victorian Era, an individual’s social class determined their access to various services such as employment, medical treatment, and education. The Victorian Era witnessed changes in various domains, including technological, medical, and scientific knowledge. Also, England’s population grew significantly. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, England transformed from an agricultural to an urban country. The factories built helped improve the living standards of people. However, a large number of individuals fell victim to oppression (Taibi, 2008). These issues were mainly linked to the social structure within Victorian society. There were three social classes during this period; Upper class, Middle class, and lower class. The upper class consisted of the fortunate individuals who owned the factories and the country’s resources. These individuals earned their wealth from exploiting the poor and also controlled the country’s politics. The members of this class were born from noble families and acquired a vast amount of land and wealth.
The Middle class comprised of people who were skilled enough to acquire jobs in the factories or run businesses to feed their families. The group mainly comprised of businessmen, professionals, teachers, engineers, and bankers among others. The growth of the middle class was encouraged by the increase in the number of factories, which resulted in more jobs. Men in this class considered financial stability to be an important aspect and therefore, restricted themselves from getting married until they were above 27 years old (McDowall, 2006).
On the other hand, the lower class occupied the lowest level in the hierarchy. This category was further divided into the poor and working class and consisted of approximately 8 percent of the country’s population, but owned less than fifty percent of the land....
