Nonverbal Communication
This is the nonlinguistic transfer of information from one person to another. These cues transmit information on how someone is feeling about a certain issue, and if you are being truthful. If the non-verbal cues match with your words it is easier to create a rapport and if they don’t, communication can turn out to be confusing and increase tension. A random quantitative survey conducted on 760 workers and managers found out that communication in the workplace is affected by approximately 60-75% by the non-verbal cause.CITATION Jan15 \l 1033 (Holmes & Stubbe, 2015)
Workplace communication needs to engage both verbal and nonverbal communication to effectively exchange information and ideas. If each department in the workplace has meaningful communication, it enhances organizational satisfaction. Therefore, workers and managers need to be aware of how their non-verbal cues can be perceived by others and also be sensitive to how they interpret non-verbal cues of others. There are various roles that the cues can play in communication such as repetition, complimenting, substitution, accenting and contradiction.
Repetition, using non-verbal cues is achieved where the action repeats the message spoken. For instance, if a worker is surprised, they might yell, “what!” The surprise can be repeated by a surprise facial expression that strengthens the message and shows the seriousness of what the worker is trying to say. According to qualitative research by CITATION Jan15 \l 1033 (Holmes & Stubbe, 2015), leaders can use appropriate verbal cues to pass the accurate and intended message to the workers which will result in an effective realization of organizational goals. Complementing the message can happen through the use of non-verbal cues. This can be achieved by showcasing traits such as confidence or sympathy when speaking. For instance, a leader can give a worker a compliment but a pat on the back when saying it will be more impactful. The role of substitution is achieved when the non-verbal cue offers a more vivid message more than words ever can. CITATION Non20 \l 1033 (Nonverbal Communication, 2020) For instance, if a manager walks into a noise-making workplace and says, “hello” and pounds the table, the workers will perceive the message as they need to keep quiet. Accenting of information occurs when the non-verbal cue underlines the message. The action or facial expression has a direct association with what is being said. If they don’t have a direct association, then the nonverbal cue will play a contradicting role in your message.
This shows that managers need to understand how to utilize nonverbal cues when they are speaking to their workers. It can be achieved by improving their self-awareness according to a study conducted by Knight (2015) on the production of transformative learning in professional and business communication. The se...
