Life as an international student can be a baffling phenomenon for international students. Probably, they are leaving their countries and traveling several miles to pursue further education. As a new student at UC Davis, you have just begun an exciting journey of discovery. At the university, you will meet students from all walks of life; all united by common pursuit of seeking education to transform their lives. The management of UC Davis has various support programs for incoming students. You do not have to worry about getting lost in a sea of humanity. Various student associations are available and integrate students from different cultures and ethnic groups. You can join these groups and keep up with colleagues from your mother country and feel at home.
Coming to UC Davis University for the first time can be such an enjoyable experience. For me, it was a cultural experience that I will never forget. I was an outgoing student and before long—probably less than two weeks—I had met staff and students from various cultural backgrounds. It struck me that education could promote cultural diversity and inclusivity of sorts. Here I was learning to appreciate everyone regardless of their weaknesses and affiliations. I was opening up to a new world with limitless boundaries and getting to learn that behind our different skin colors and language barriers, we are all equal.
Perhaps the greatest lesson I learned is that almost everyone adapts to the American culture very fast. I mean sooner or later, you will realize that you understand most of the slangs that students use. You will know about MacDonald’s and maybe start enjoying their dishes. Soon you might forget about the Chinese Cuisines—if you come from China. The American culture has so much influence on international students and unless they are careful, they soon get absorbed into it. Perhaps the trend is possible because 90% of the students comprise Americans (Panetta, 2018). The influences notwithstanding, I urge you to remember your cultural identity and appreciate your roots.
Initially, I was often confused about the behaviors of my fellow students. As soon as it was 6 p.m., everyone would leave the class, leaving the professor behind and alone in the lecture room.
