Religion expression: Crucifix Of Jesus Christ From The Cleveland Museum Of Art

Essay Instructions:

Religions express the mystery of life and the reality of the sacred through “symbol systems.” For our purposes you will be looking at religious art and how particular pieces express notions of theology, faith and belief. These objects (e.g. the cross) and pieces of art act as forms of mediation for the devotee. Whether it be the Cross and its multiple layers of theology, a statue of the Buddha as an expression of his teachings, or any other artistic medium of faith they are meant to communicate to the viewer the fundamental elements of the faith and draw the viewer into a relationship with the object
Part I: Go to the Cleveland Museum of Art and choose at least one piece of art as an example of symbolic expression from one of the traditions we have studied (*not your own). Describe the painting or object, and give some background: its origin and place in the tradition. Quote authorities, give examples, and identify your sources with proper citations. Take a picture of the work(s) you are examining and embed them in the paper.
*As an option you may choose to compare/contrast more than one piece of art. If that is the case you may choose to compare it with a piece of work from your own tradition.
Sketch the work. You should have 3 sketches: a) 1(one) perspective of the full work; b) 2(two) detail sketches of the work. The sketches should be scanned or photographed and embedded in your paper.
Part II: Does the work communicate a particular theological, spiritual aspect? Does it evoke a state of mind and or style of behavior for those who engage it or use it? What seems to be the purpose of the work and impact of this symbol or teaching you find present in the work?
Part III: What do you find appealing or unappealing about the work? Have you ever experienced the mystery of life that it points to? Are you drawn to such ways of expressing mystery? Or do you hold that such indirect modes of expression obscure the truth about life and the world?
