Back in the late 1700s, several states called for the protection of individual rights by the government, James Madison complied several Amendments that later became the 10 amendment known as the Bill of Rights. The first amendment allows the individual the freedom of speech ("The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration," n.d.).
The bill of rights refers to the first ten amendments of the US constitution that focuses on the government limits, including protecting citizens from government interference ("The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration," n.d.). The Bill of Rights has been a key part of American history because citizens are protected against any government interference. The main aim of these rights is to establish a clear relationship between citizens and the federal government. The constitution gives citizens the freedom to freely speak ("The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration," n.d.).
After reading the first amendment of the constitution, I have learned the true meaning of freedom of speech. I have always thought of such freedom to be limited to protecting our rights of saying whatever we want. I now know that freedom of speech can be interpreted in several ways. It is more than just expressing ourselves through words. Freedom of speech covers several areas of expression which includes music and art forms (Bunker & Calvert, 2016).
