Reading Funny in Farsi
Firoozeh Dumas, in her memoir “Funny in Farsi,” portrays some of the challenges that foreigners encounter in a new country for the first few days. Immigrants feel like they are lost, and they try to justify what they have heard about the country with what they are experiencing. For example, the author says, “It was a kind and orderly nation full of clean bathrooms, a land where traffic laws were obeyed and where whales jumped through hoops” (Dumas, 2003). At this point, Kazem is describing how the United States of America (USA) is like after spending several years in California and Texas studying his postgraduate. When Firoozeh and her mother were unable to locate their home after school, she believed that what her father told them was true. Besides, they met a stranger who gave them a mobile phone. As such, they were able to get help where they were taken to the doorstep of their house. That is the point that the author started to believe that the USA was a great place.
The incidents portrayed in the narrative depict that culture unites people and can cause discrimination or labeling of individuals. For example, since the author and her family migrated to the USA, everyone would tell that they were foreigners. Specifically, they were naпve. When Firoozeh and her mother went to Leffingwell Elementary School, they did not communicate in English. Other students were staring at them since they appeared different from ordinary Americans.
