Introduction
In recent years, views of immigration in the United States have shifted with many Americans perceiving immigrants as a source of national prosperity, rather than an eminent burden. Foner (2016) reaffirms that immigration has continued to be a critical part of the country with the growing numbers of immigrants since 1980. The public shift in the way we view immigration has been largely driven by pro-immigration and racially liberal standpoints held by the Democrats (Pew Research Center, 2017). According to Foner (2016), the racial system in the United States is an important component of how immigrants are perceived and their experiences in the country. Today, the same anti-Chinese American racism in the 1850s has played in a role in understanding the importance of immigration and immigrants (History.gov, n.d). This paper argues that racism and American racial systems impact the way we view immigration.
In the history of the United States, anti-Chinese-American racism has painted a picture of how minority groups are viewed (Starkey, 2016). Starkey (2016) writes about a story of Michael Luo who wrote an open letter to a white woman condemning the insults she hurled at his family at a Korean Restaurant. While at the restaurant with his family, the woman made anti-Chinese-American statements saying the Chinese Americans should “Go back to China!” The letter that appeared in the “New York Times” reveals how racism impacts the view of Asian-Americans and their experiences regardless of their contributions and how successful they have become in the country (Joshi, 2019). Racial statements expressed in the letter shows that a section of Americans views immigration as a burden.
