My Personal Experience of Racism
Racism has been a significant issue for many years in the United States of America (USA). In particular, the USA is the most favorite destination for many people from different parts of the world. That is the reason why there exist individuals with distinctive cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. Some cultures are considered more superior than others, which incubate the problem of racism. For example, African Americans are perceived as inferior people as compared to white people. Although the government and other institutions have tried to eliminate racism in the USA, it remains a significant issue even today. For instance, some organizations do not employ individuals from a particular ethnic background. When it comes to the problem of police brutality, it affects black people more than it does for other minority groups. For this reason, the paper discusses different ways that I have experienced or witnessed racism in society.
I have witnessed racism on several occasions indirectly. For instance, some students do not want to be in the same discussion group with their colleagues from the minority groups. One may find that an Indian American, Mexican American, or African American is isolated by others due to his or her racial background. However, racism is being eradicated gradually by the current generation, which does not take cultural differences as a barrier for interpersonal relationships. When one comes from the minority group, an individual must be ready to face discrimination at some point in life. If it is not in the community, stereotyping might occur at school or workplace. When a student is isolated by others due to his or her racial background, the person might find it challenging to express himself or herself. Besides, the individual’s academic performance might be affected adversely due to the lack of participation in the discussion teams and a low level of self-confidence.
Amy Harmon asserts that anti-black bigotry or racism affecting people based on their skin color can take various forms. Some researchers recorded the daily experiences of 101 African American teenagers for two weeks in Washington. Participants reported around 5,600 experiences of racial discrimination, which go down to about 5 instances of racism daily (Harmon, 2020). The findings portray a high frequency of racism in the USA. Some of these individuals were students at high schools, summer programs, and middle schools. The reason why some of the microaggressions are insidious is that many white people perceive them as normal.
