In the book "An American Lyric" by Claudia Rankine the author begins the first chapter by recalling a period of utter listlessness. A secondary memory of the author is invoked. In the memory, one is recalling the sounds that a body makes particular in the mouth. In this chapter, Claudia Rankine tells the memories from a second-person point of view to invite readers to them at firsthand rather than at a distance. As this chapter continues, the strength of negative feelings increases. In the second chapter of this book, a picture of Hennessy Youngman is displayed.
