Purpose of study
The study was carried out to determine the different seating arrangements in elementary schools as well as the teacher's decisions on who sits where. The researcher aimed at getting information regarding the purpose of having the particular seating arrangements (Gremmen, van den Berg, Segers & Cillessen, 2016).
Participants
The research was done on 50 teachers in the 4th to 6th grade in an elementary school.
Data analysis
The various seating arrangements in classrooms have a reason for their existence. In most cases, the arrangement is associated with both students and teachers preferences.
Method of data collection
The first phase of the data collection processes involved interviews with teachers regarding their considerations and goals for classroom arrangements. Phase two involved the use of questionnaires about the various seating arrangements.
Results
It turned out that different teachers preferred different seating arrangements in regard to their age, gender, beliefs and years of experience in their career. During the interview, the teachers highlighted two to nineteen reasons explaining the seating arrangements. The main reasons were based on academic performance whereby they place students in small groups In order to ensure maximum student cooperation. As well, phase two revealed that the subject-oriented and the student-oriented personal characteristics were low. Also, the concurrence between the methods of data collection used was low.
