Initial Discussion Post:
The identification of congenital heart defects in the newborn can be complicated.
Locate a journal article published in the United states discussing pulse oximetry screening for congenital heart disease in the newborn. After reading the article discuss the following:
#1. Identify two (2) variables needed to promote the accuracy of pulse oximetry results in the newborn. Discuss why these variables are important to address.
#2. Describe two (2) benefits and two (2) limitations to performing a pulse oximetry on all newborns.
#3. Select one (1) of the six Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies and discuss how this competency can be used to make pulse oximetry screening in the newborn a reality to improve patient outcomes.

#1. Identify two (2) variables needed to promote the accuracy of pulse oximetry results in the newborn. Discuss why these variables are important to address.'
Wood et al (2015) reviewed the pulse oximetry diagnostic patterns in a rural Vermont Children's Hospital focusing on treating and managing congenital heart disease (CCHD). Implementing a universal screening tool and follow-up procedures are crucial to ensure the accuracy of pediatric pulse oximetry results. The study further highlighted that the use of a Universal Pulse Oximetry Screening (POS) helped to identify previously undetected CCHD. However, for those with, tetralogy of Fallot and normal oxygen saturation there is still likelihood that the universal POS may not detect CCHD (Wood et al., 2015). The follow-up procedures are necessary to identify cases of test negative that are inaccurate, and his helps in discharge planning and improving the accuracy of the results. When hospitals have records on pulse oximetry testing, it is easier to evaluate the accuracy of the screening tool. Cases are further categorized into critical, or serious groups depending on the intervention required after detection of CHDD.
#2. Describe two (2) benefits and two (2) limitations to performing a pulse oximetry on all newborns.'
Routine pulse oximetry help is a cost effective and low risk approach in detecting cardiovascular defects and oxygen saturation issues in newborns, and this reduces morbidity and mortality (Ryan et al., 2014). Screening helps to detect congenital heart defects before discharge and this is cost effective as interventions are undertaken and this reduces the risk of complications (Ryan et al., 2014). The care plan depends on physical examination and pulse oximetry tests improve the safety net, as there is timely diagnosis to improve health outcomes. Nonetheless, the pulse oximetry does not detect a...
