In the United States, an estimate 30 to 50 million people are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose (macronutrient), which is caused by the deficiency of the enzyme lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose (micronutrients). When an individual with this diseases ingests lactose it remains undigested resulting in activation of the inflammatory cascade, abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, and gas.
If this is not managed and ignored it can lead to further digestive disorders such as severe gastroenteritis, which damages the intestinal lining. If properly managed this disorder can have minimal effects on an individuals overall health, if ignored this disorder/disease can become the foundation of greater overall health concerns. As we know any chronic inflammation within our bodies can cause havoc and degeneration of our systems and bodies, as well as stress on the digestive system is never a path of wellness. The connection between healthy gut and healthy life is well documented, as well as it is believed that overall health of a person can be measured by the overall health of the digestive tract.

Sanders (2000) defines probiotics as microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits when consumed. The prescription of probiotics can be a remedy to a lot of conditions including lactose intolerance. Scientist's scrutiny has shown that the use of probiotics can be advantageous and disadvantageous.
To begin with, probiotics help in the alleviation of lactose intolerance. Studies show that the bacteria lactobacillus, when added to foodstuffs like yogurt, can help relieve symptoms of lactose intolerance in children. Also, probiotics contribute to reducing blood pressure and according to a study on hypertension, the application helps reduce severity on people whose blood pressure is elevated (Khalesi, Sun, Buys, & Jayasinghe, 2014). Probiotics also can help to prevent and treating cavities and periodontal diseases even though more study is needed on this issue (Laleman & Teughels, 2015).
