The Violence of Social Inequality
Thomas Piketty is an economist who lost a friend in the protests held due to the Covid-19 outbreak. There is increased unemployment, and the global economy is sinking into its worst recession. Picketty takes a look at policies and political systems that sustain economic inequality and how the world might move towards a fairer economic system. Some of the social differences that the pandemic has exposed include gender inequality, health care, and social class.
Gender Inequality
Men seem to be at a higher risk than women when it comes to matters of direct health impacts of the Corona virus. Men are dying at nearly twice the rate as women from COVID-19 (Rabin 2020). Coronavirus epidemic has also led to increased violence in the families since they are forced to stay together, and this puts more women at high risk. In the labor market, women’s employment opportunities are more affected than those of men.
Health Care Inequality
Coronavirus has exposed health inequalities in our societies. Research has shown that most of the people profoundly affected are those with underlying health issues. These health issues include high blood pressure, HIV/AIDS, and respiratory diseases. To cope with the consequences of ill health, income support must be considered, and therefore, this makes people from poorer backgrounds more exposed to infection.
