Over the years poetry has a major role in the society, as a way of cultural significance and personal expression. Poets across the world from different cultural backgrounds have used poetry to express their feelings, aspirations, fears and other emotions. Poetry therefore serves a rich backdrop of the issues that are experienced in life at the community the individual levels. It is a basis of the creativity that brings about subtle expressions using words, and poetry skills to bring about meaning and relevance. The elements of poetic expressions are universal and thus are not restricted to any areas across the globe. Different poets across the globe will bring about expressions that all the people in the globe can relate with. As such, poetry plays a subtle in the field of creative arts much like music and paintings. It is a language that is spoken at the global level, expressing feelings that are universal. As such it is easy to see an underlying theme between different poems with different contexts. This means that, different poets may achieve the same level of expressing a certain feeling regardless of the content they provide, the setting and the styles.
Poets
Marge Piercy was born to a working class family in Detroit, during a time the family had been hard hit by the depression. She received a scholarship to the University of Michigan and later on received her MA from the Northwestern University. During her university year, she became an activist organizing political movements against the Vietnam War. These were experiences that shaped her later life and career development and growth. During the time that Piercy has been a poet, she has published more than 17 volumes of poetry and 17 novels. She has been a prolific writer and most of the novels are on social concerns.
Shirley Geok-Lin Lim is also a prolific writer born in Malaysia and raised by her father, after her own mother abandoned the family. After college, she moved to the United States where she eventually settled in California. She is the author of several pieces among them, Among the White Moon Faces: an Asian American memoir of homeland, Tow Dreams: New and Selected Stories, Crossing the Peninsula and other poems among others.

The similarities of the two poems though hidden exist and bring out the expressions of the two poets that give the pieces their recognition and attachment to the readers. One of the elements of the poems that comes out clearly enough is the voice and the tone.
