Dear Sir,
I am the worker advocate at the Downtown Vegan, and I’d like to bring your attention to two of the major issues: workers are often required to attend official meetings and not paid anything, and the restaurant frequently hires workers on trial basis but not paid what they actually deserve. I feel that the manager should not force workers to come to the restaurant and attend the meeting on Saturday and Sunday. If he still wants to do that, then he should either pay them fairly for their time or arrange the meeting anytime from Monday to Friday. On the other hand, the workers being hired for a three-month trial are paid only $12.75 per hour, $1.25 less than Ontario’s minimum wage of $14.00. It is a clear case of violating the law, and the manager can be dragged to the court in this regard (Ministry of Labour).
