The essay elucidates on the purpose of writing personal essays and also expounds on the various types of personal essays. The author also goes deeper and reveals to his audience the different components that make up personal writing. To the author, personal essays should not be blunt in their expression of emotions and appeal to the audience. The author believes that all personal essay writers should be aware of their audience, and should speak through their choice of words and make sure that they engage their audience.
According to the author, writers should explore and not just conform to the writing norms. Writers should try and be effectively descriptive in their personal essays. To the writer, "effective description requires using carefully chosen language that creates the visual image you want readers to have of your story’s subject" (14).
