1. Parents often have the fear that teachers could replace them in their children’s lives and affections. While teachers may be friendly to children, they might not have the capacity to replace their parents. Thus, the parents have an emotional response triggered by the separation with their kids and the fact that they will be interacting with their teachers for more hours in a day. Besides, some parents could be busy with their work such that they do not spend quality time with their children even after school. In this case, one of the powerful conflicting emotions is competition (Brumariu, 2015). They will always compete to win their children by providing intense affection. Parents feel that their children are attached to them and their teachers, and the latter relationship could grow and be more intact than their ties at home. Therefore, fear leads to competition for participation in the children’s lives.
The other emotion is insecurity. According to Brumariu (2015), parents feel insecure because they think they are not number one and the only people in their children’s lives. And just like the emotion of competition, they believe teachers may replace them. Also, they are insecure about their kid’s interactions in the fear that issues such as critical questions could affect their performance at school (Brumariu, 2015). However, parents should understand that teachers will only have a secondary attachment with their children and minimize the emotions towards the interaction. They should have positive desires, such as guilt, that they may not be spending adequate time with their children (Brumariu, 2015). This will reinforce a platform for them to create sufficient time between the tight working schedules to be with their children. It will also enable them to overcome negative emotions.
2. Just like adults, children can develop close relationships with the people around them. The immediate and continuous interaction between the children and the people who are mostly around them can also affect the primary parental attachment (Vader, n.d.). Any additional attachment that a child may have at the expense of their parents should be minimized to preserve their relationship with the primary parental figure. However, it is difficult to control the connections, especially if children already have a close intimate attachment with the people they spent most of their time with, even if they are not the parents. Research by (Vader n.d.) shows that the extension with other people may outgrow their primary relationships with parents, detaching them from the figures. Eventually, children learn to interact with the people spending substantial time with them (Vader, n.d.). They get used to the interaction such that the prior relationships, including association with parents, lose significance.
