Wellness is not only about nutrition but also the overall health of a human being in terms of mental, physical, emotional, and financial well-being. Wellness is about leading a fulfilling and health-oriented life. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) (n.d.), is not just about being disease-free but also experiencing mental, physical, and social well-being.

There are eight dimensions of wellness, each of which should be considered in enhancing a healthy quality of life. These are physical, emotional, social, financial, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, and environmental wellness. These dimensions are connected and to achieve optimal wellness and happiness, a balance has to be created among the dimensions. It is therefore important to have a work-life balance to promote wellness.

Work-life balance is a state where individuals attain a level of equality between their work and personal life so that they can achieve their overall goals in life (Comstock, 2019). Work-life balance and its importance date back to 1940 when the US, through the amendment of the Fair Labour and Standards Act, decided that workers should work 40 hours a week instead of 100 hours, thus giving them time for a personal life (Kumanu, 2019).

A lack of work-life balance has been linked to poor health and well-being since it affects the eight dimensions of wellness. As indicated earlier, a balance has to be created among the dimensions since more focus on one affects the others. For example, too much focus on occupational (work) dimension affects the social and/or physical dimensions.

It is worth noting that work-life balance can only be achieved through effective time management. Ineffective time management contributes to poor mental and physical health. Many individuals are unable to create a boundary between work and personal time as they allow work to interfere with their personal time. As a result, many individuals suffer from fatigue, emotional breakdown, and stress, among other health issues.

As different aspects of life change and the world evolves, so will the focus and ideas on work-life balance. The evolution of work-life balance through different generations has been interesting. For instance, for baby-boomers, work-life balance was ignored since all they wanted was stable employment. However, Gen Xers focused more on family and they valued time off from work. Millennials have been instrumental in improving the views on work-life balance since they wanted to work in an environment that supported their personal life beyond work. As a result, employers have made changes to create a healthy and flexible work environment through paid time-offs and working from home, among other approaches. \
