Art is a crucial part of ancient and contemporary society. People use it to express their feelings and store historical events for future reference. Thus, studying art reveals ancient lives, and one can compare and contrast life in the past and present. Through studying art, one can use the trend and foreshadow how life will be in future. However, the challenge is often in analyzing the art because different people can interpret it differently. Jazz at The Takoma Station is a painting that Joseph Holston did, showing people performing a song (Holston, 2017). This is seen through the various instruments the characters in the painting play.
The first sight of Jazz at The Takoma Station shows that the characters are probably African Americans. They have a dark kin complication that can only be interpreted based on the darkness of the exposed body parts. I thought this raised a pertinent question about the identity of the people. First, the painting was done in America at a time when racial discrimination was on the rise. This could be the first racism pointer, although the racism theme is portrayed positively as the characters do not seem to be undergoing any mistreatment. However, music during this era was primarily protesting racial injustices. This could be the motivator for Holton's decision to paint the Jazz at The Takoma Station.
