Leadership is a culmination of skills and knowledge that enable individuals interact effectively with their subjects through emotional intelligence. The five elements of emotional intelligence include self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, social skills, and motivation. However, the most important aspect of emotional intelligence in leadership is self-awareness. This paper discusses the behaviors that a person with a strong self-awareness demonstrates in the context of leading and managing a group.
Self-aware leaders are driven by the conscience of what their strengths are, and acknowledging their weaknesses (Bellin, 2012). A self-aware leader owns up to their mistakes and takes credit for the excellence. They keep an open mind, which allow them to regulate their emotional world. They act as team members, and not as number ones. These leaders are able to develop and articulate their values and principles, with proper understanding of how they differ from other people (Gallagher & Costal, 2012).
