Workarounds are methods that do not fall within the accepted standard, used to achieving a goal, an activity or objective, when the usual methods or process or procedure are not working.
In our hospital, we had a new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system was developed to print out a single sheet of paper for every medication order. The orders were to be subsequently faxed to the pharmacy department. The nurses realized that the procedure was tedious especially when needed to fax a multi paged urgent orders.
The nurses therefore had to approaches to go about the challenge. One was to avoid faxing and call into the pharmacy and call for the orders. The other way was transcribing all the orders to come up with a single sheet of paper and fax as a one-page. The options were taken majorly to save on time and provide timely services to the patients when the usual EHR system would pose delays in the services and endangered clients life (Barrett, A. K., & Stephens, K. K., 2016).
