The Myths
It comprises of the four worlds that did not have the sun and the Fifth World in which the Navajo people live in. It is also known as Changeable World.
First World
The First world was referred to as the black wool (Ni'hodilqil). It had four corners and there were four clouds. The four clouds had the elements of the First World were yellow, white, blue, and black. The black cloud represented the female being. Just like the child sleeps after being nursed, so did life sleep in the darkness of the female creature. The black cloud was the male being. The male being was the Dawn of the first world. The East was the place the White Cloud and the Dark Cloud me and First Man was formed (Atse'hastqin). With the First Man, the white corn and the first seed corn were formed. Five names were given to the First World in connection to the First Man. They were the Red Earth, Dark Earth, Floating Land, One Tree, and Ni'hodilqil. The first world was a small and floating island. The creatures of the first world were mist people, they did not have a definite form, but they were to change into birds, reptiles, and birds. In the western part of the First World, there was the Blue Cloud and the Yellow Cloud. They came to form the First Woman and her yellow corn. The First Man was on the Eastern side to represent Dawn and was the giver of life, The First Woman was on the western side and she represented Death and Darkness. The Coyote was born from the ocean and knew good and evil. Coyote bright witchcraft. Angry Coyote was considered as the devil. A lot of people came to the First World and the First Man and Woman decided to travel to the Second World to look for good living spaces.
The Second World
Since there was a contention in the First World, the First Man and the First Woman followed by others, climbed up from the World of Darkness and Dampness to the Second World. The First Man and First Woman realized that the blue creatures were unhappy and divided. Other people were living there like blue hawks, blue herons. These people made the second world hostile to those people who were from the First world. There were deaths and fighting. After seeing this, the First Man decided to find peace by looking for another world. The first four saw an opening in the second world and proceeded to the third world.
Third World
The bluebirds were the first to reach the third world, followed by the first four and others. There was a great river from north to south that was the Female River. There were creatures like chipmunks, deer, turkey, and snakes. There was another river from east to west that is the Male River. In the Third World, there were six mountains and there was a Standing Black Sash which was a ceremonial place called Yol. There was no sun and there only six mountains and two rivers in this land. The mountains and rivers were not in the present form, instead, they were the substances of the First Man and First Woman. Many people lived in the Third World.
